C’était à la fin du Fespaco 1995. Envieux du public burkinabè qui pouvait, tous les 2 ans, voir les récentes productions africaines, je pensai que les Camerounais pouvaient y avoir droit, eux aussi. Je demandai alors à Fiilippe Sawadogo, Délégué Général du Fespaco à l’époque , si on pouvait organiser un Fespaco décentralisé en Afrique Centrale. Il me fit comprendre que Non, parce que dans Fespaco, il y avait le O de Ouagadougou, et que même à Bobo Dioulasso la délocalisation n’était pas possible.
Roger Gnoan M’balla avait en 1993 remporté l’étalon d’or avec son film “Au nom du Christ”. J’aimais ce film. Je lui dis qu’il fallait qu´il vienne au Cameroun, et malgré les dizaines de sollicitations qui lui tombaient encore de partout, en ces temps où accepter d’ aller à un festival ou une projection signifait trimballer avec soi la seule copie disponible, Roger n’hésita pas, ignora des festivals europeens et vint au Camerooun. “Au nom du Christ” fut le premier film diffusé par Écrans Noirs, comme pour tester le public, et ce fut un triomphe dans la mythique salle du cinema Abbia. Le festival ne démarra que 2 ans plus tard, certes, mais le film inaugurait une belle aventure. Depuis 1995, Roger est resté un fidèle défenseur des Écrans Noirs, toujours disponible, honoré de l ecran d’honneur en 2010
